Anneloes Pabbruwee ( Rotterdam 1972) lives and works in Amsterdam. In addition to being a photographer, she is a sound recordist in the film and TV industry for over 20 years. Many years of working with directors and cameramen sparked the desire to tell her own stories about people dealing with real life. At Paris Photo in 2014 her serie ‘Ill fly with you’ was distinguished with the ‘Coup de coeur’ de jury 2014’ award. In 2015 she graduated at the Fotoacademie Amsterdam with her self published book ‘Wildcats’. In that year her work was exhibited at the FotoFestival Naarden. In 2016 and 2017 her work was on display at the kunstRAI in Amsterdam.

Pabbruwee’s work is intimate and close. She seeks precisely those moments in which looks and poses leave room for interpretation. Moments that seem disconnected, as if something is about to happen or just took place. It’s in those ‘in between’ moments where she captures vulnerability, modesty, strength and vitality. Pabbruwee’s open and curious way of working can be felt in her often cinematographic visual language.

With her recurring projects about youth she moves into different cultures, she visits places where young people come together like the beaches of Naples, the Casablanca coast, parties at home in Amsterdam or in an Italian convent. ‘I like spending time with young people at that crucial turning point when they are entering adulthood. Their free lives but also their search for identity fascinates me. A world that seems so open, but is so closed at the same time. Friendships begin to deepen, mutual contact becomes more intimate and sensuality is in development. In search of their identity they take leave of their lack of inhibition. It’s a period full of possibilities and confusion.’ Without disturbing or judging, Pabbruwee captures beauty, uncertainty and vibrant energy but also stillness, as an ode to this youth.
